The Northdale Keep was built after the Zentrim were finally forced out of their occupation of Shadowdale some 250 years ago. Since then the keep has survived the final attacks of the Zentil army and marauding orcish tribes. Around the keep Charton has sprung up. The Magistrate of Northdale governs from the keep and has the luxury of 200 crack soldiers at his disposal. The Orc Quarter is the home of almost 500 orcs at any one time, with many coming and going. The quarter is mostly made up of a group of old abandoned disheveled warehouse that the Orcs have claimed as their own. The quarter has presented a great problem for the magistrate as he attempts to walk a diplomatic line. The Owlbear Inn located at the South Gate is the best Inn in Charton, but it is in fact the only Inn in Charton. It has carved out this monopoly by delivering great service to travelers. The Owlbear Inn takes its name from the Owlbear Hill and the huge stuffed owlbear that adorns its large dining hall. The Inn is owned and operated by Gareth Cousins, a burly likable sort. The Inns common room is frequented by many of the town’s guards, due to its proximity to the Keep. An orcish bar that is a constant headache for the magistrate. The bar is open all day and all night, selling watered-down liqueur to the orcs of the quarter. Fights often break out and carry over into the streets, almost always ending in bloodshed. Also the Pit has caught fire on a number of occasions. The splendor of this temple rivals that of the Temple of Bennu in Shadowdale. It is lavishly adorned with stained glass windows and large mirrors, which reflects Ra’s sunlight throughout the temple and out into the town. A large golden statue of the Sun God lies just outside the temple. The temple’s wealth is largely due to its High Priest, Terrel Bowson, whose family is possibly the richest merchant family of the Dales. The Tide has invested quite a bit of silver to build this fine guildhall. The hall has all the amenities that any adventurer might want and has served as the center of tide operations within the Northdale. The hall is so nice that that the Tides Guildmaster has spent much of his time in Charton, causing rumors to spread about possible problems in the region. The establishment of this temple has been the cause of much concern among townsfolk, as it had previously been unheard of in a human town for a temple of the Pantheon of Darkness to be established. Unfortunately the Orcs are adamant about their temple and the town had been brought to the brink of all out war before diplomats of both kingdoms were able to calm the situation. High Priest Bowson of the temple of Ra considers the temple an abomination and has vowed to get it out of the town. This is the economic center for Charton, as ranchers from the northdale plains bring their cattle in to be sold or slaughtered for meat. The ranchers have been able to increase their profit by employing orcs at a low wage, who don’t seem to mind the sloppy work. Also grain farmers from the dale bring their crops to be store here as well. The Porter family has been breeding horses in the northdale for many generations and is widely considered to be the place to go to purchase a mount. However, they do not do much more than the basic training, but their prices are more reasonable than those you would find in Shadowdale are. Their ranch lies just to the north of town bordering the Shadowdale Road for several miles. The recently remodeled Golden Goblet is the center of Charton’s nightlife for the human citizens of the town. The Goblet is spacious and comfortable with a second floor of tables overlooking much of the first. It boasts a great selection of Bek & Bok’s best ales and wines and some hearty fair to go along with it. Since its opening it has been a favorite hangout for the Crimson Tide who sometimes monopolize the upper tables. The sucessful ex-tide member, Daris Overson, owns the Goblet. Daris takes great pride in his new venture. The sign above the doorway to this simply reads "Fine Pelts and Skins", but most townsfolk refer to it as Gallerin’s Skins. This shop is the place to go in Shadowdale if you are looking to purchase or sell animal skins. However, Gallerin only will except the finest of cuts. You can find everything from beaver pelts to more exotic one-of-a-kind items. Some say that Gallerin even had at some dragon hide at one time, by he has never confirmed the rumor. Gallerin will not always be found tending the shop, as he is the main source for the pelts they sell. If he’s not there his equally discerning brother will be managing the store. This is the only school of magic in all the dales. A half-elf alterationist, Fryzilin has broken the normal master/apprentice way of teaching. He caters the powerful and wealthy of the dale by taking their children in, as well as their money. Fryzilin has come under much scrutany by other local wizards, many of whom doubt is spellcasting abilities. The Mansfield's are one of the richest and most powerful business families in the Dalelands. They are responsible for much of the meat processing in Charton and Shadowdale. Recently though the patriarch of the family has passed and there has been bickering between the remainding family memebers.
